Oni | ![]() |
Ura Oni (Ura-fumen, 裏譜面) is an alternate version of certain songs found on Oni difficulty. The word 'Ura' means 'deep', 'under', or just generally 'inside the surface', and this is not a new difficulty level, is not found in all songs, and it takes special knowledge (and lots of internet lurking) to get to unlock it, although Namco have been getting word out for Ura mode on arcade Taiko official sites.
The main differences from a song's Ura Oni and its regular Oni is the note patterns. In Ura Oni, it's usually much harder than regular Oni, sometimes resulting in an increase in the number of difficulty stars. In some cases it may result in a song being completely taken out of the selection list, and replaced with something else (full versions of a song, faster or slowed-down versions of a song, etc.) and of course the notes involved are changed. The song preview in the selection screen will also be different so it's easier to differentiate regular from Ura.
Ura Oni notes were introduced to console versions in Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Dodon! to Nidaime, where they were openly selectable alongside their normal counterparts, and did not need any special button sequence to unlock. This trend continues for later console games as well, with Taiko Portable DX using the same mechanic. Ura mode is usually available only on the Oni difficulty in the arcade, but full difficulty sets for each were made for the console versions.
Unlocking Ura Oni in the arcade
Taiko no Tatsujin 11 to 14
On the title screen, hit the left and right rims on the arcade machine alternately, 20 times. Both P1 and P2 drums can be used for this, but only one is needed to complete the code.
For Taiko 11, the message 'hazure?' (incorrect?) will appear. For all newer arcades, the number above 'Taiko no Tatsujin' in the title screen will glow gold.
Taiko no Tatsujin 0
On the difficulty select screen, after Oni mode is revealed, hit the drum's right rim ten times more. The rectangle for Oni will turn dark blue. To switch from Ura Oni back to regular Oni and vice versa, hit the drum's right rim ten times again. The rectangle for Oni will revert to white.
Unlocking Ura Oni on console
Ura modes for songs are unlocked in the same way as regular hidden songs and there is no special method to obtaining them. For more details go to the unlock pages for each console game with Ura mode available.

*Difficulty ratings and song genres are subject to change, the ones listed below are the ratings of their first appearance. Check the full songlists, series articles and Song of the Week for more details.
Note: Haya Saitama 2000 and Kita Saitama 200 are considered as individual songs on console Taiko and in Taiko 0, and not as Ura difficulties. Subsequently, all full versions and song changes are considered separate songs after Taiko 0.
