Song of the Week! 24 October 2020

October's almost gone, but here's a Vocaloid feature before that. The reason for it, as you will see, is not the usual "Vocaloid music so bad to Lokamp it gives him the jibbles" shtick...

IA's latest song in Taiko gaming made its debut on Blue Version, courtesy of the popular Asu no Yozora Shoukaikan (lit. 'Night Sky Patrol of Tomorrow') from January 11th, 2015- the date of its online debut on Youtube. This Hall of Legend-status track was composed by the nicknamed Orangestar/MikanseiP, in activity since April 2013 with a song-making portfolio mostly consisting of rock songs starring IA as his digital singer, although he has been to other genres as well as using Hatsune Miku and ONE's voice banks from time to time. Featured in two of EXIT TUNES' 2015 album releases -Vocalofantasy feat. Hatsune Miku and Mikansei Eight Beats (未完成エイトビーツ)- this track also bolsters a 'rearranged version' that was released in August 2017 under the name of Kimi no Yozora Shoukaikan (キミノヨゾラ哨戒班; lit. 'Your Night Sky Patrol'), which also managed to join the Hall of Legend ranks with over 10 million views, just like the original did!

The influence of this song among the rhythm gaming landscape is the main reason of it being our star of the show for today! ... at least, a great part of it. Asu no Yozora Shoukaikan made the music gaming rounds across the years, gracing Bemani's jubeat series and a couple more dead series from the same music game division: REFLEC BEAT and MUSECA. Elsewhere, the Night Sky Patrol's scope has also extended into Taito, Marvelous and Sega territories inside the respective companies' Groove Coaster, WACCA and CHUNITHM series, while the 2017 rearranged version made it on Sega's maimai and Ongeki instead. Playable cusom covers of it were also made for Bemani's Nostalgia and especially the mobile rhythm game BanG Dream!, which at long last takes us to the why we're having this song today, as there's a new Vocaloid-lead contender in the ongoing otoge far East landscape...

The result of a three-header company partnership of Craft Egg (of BanG Dream! fame), Colorful Palette and Crypton Future Media, Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! feat. Hatsune Miku (プロジェクトセカイ カラフルステージ! feat. 初音ミク) is a mobile music game whose original release window was set on late April, a date which had to miss due to the ongoing... shall we say, 'worldwide viral sensation', and finally was launched at the end of the previous month. Asu no Yozora Shoukaikan is one of the songs that has joined the game's track list in its first week (link), but it's already far from the only track in common with Taiko gaming! Several of Hatsune Miku's early hits (Melt, World Is Mine, Tell Your World) are already playable in Project Sekai, as well as more modern choice tracks from other Vocaloids (CharlesRoki, Yobanashi Deceive), each playable as their original version and their Project Sekai-dedicated covers just like all the other tracks in the game.

Back to Taiko gaming, Asu no Yozora Shoukaikan is what happens when you take chained-up cluster sequences a-la Ikenai Taiyou's Oni Go-Go Time portion, make them commonplace and play them at a higher base BPM all throughout the play, netting yourself a physical-fitness chart to rival the likes of Wasabi Body Blow and Metal Police's Ura Oni. Be sure not to pour out too much energy on its longer drumroll parts in-between, lest you want to pass the song unstathed on the mistakes side of things!
