chystd (China Yesterday)
Once upon a time, the most elusive, non-game/variety-show-related songs you could be able to play with among arcade releases were the ones that were made exclusively playable for the Chinese-based Taiko no Tatsujin models of 11 and 12's dedicated firmware. Sure, most of these mantain their elusivity status on toe, but the resurgeance of the official Nijiiro Version arcades in China with their dedicated firmware has brought one palpable advantage over the 2nd-gen cabinets' accessibility prospects: being machines capable of receiving arcade updates, it might just happen that some of the Chinese-exclusive licenses may hit the Japanese firmware as independent updates, later down the line. Meet the latest China Nijiiro song to manage such a jump on Saturday grand style!
This is one of the earliest solo hits from Chinese rapper/songwriter Huang Zitao (黄子韬), mostly known by his stage name Tao and by his later acting carreer, spanning both movies (You Are My Sunshine, Railroad Tigers among many) and TV series, including 2018's The Negotiator. The performer was at first introduced in 2011 as the third member of SM Entertainment's Chinese/South Korean boy band act Exo (엑소), but a few years later the same Huang Zitao filed a lawsuit to breach out of the contract with SM Entertainment, claiming a sizeable loss of freedom due to the contract's long tenure of exclusivity of business with the company (10 years!). While the appeal was dismissed on court, the performer set up his own publishing label in 2015's Huang Z.TAO Studio (黄子韬Z.TAO Studio), created for independently managing his solo activities. SM Entertainment tried to fill a lawsuit on this course of action, but the court ultimately dismissed the lawsuit on the grounds that Tao's own label would only employ his own name and image for solo works, while still upholding the ongoing exclusivity contract that lasted up until the year 2022.
The first Extended Play album to come out of the Huang Z.TAO Studio's rise was July 23rd, 2015's T.A.O, the first one to feature the song Yesterday overall, with its music written by Palace Court (宫阁). It was originally added on August 21st last year as a Chinese Nijiiro Version exclusive before joining the mainstay Japanese firmware family on this very day! It's rather fitting in a way, considering how to enjoy 1/16 pure charting on an averagely-long track without gimmick feels like we're looking at the "yesterday" of official music charting, too!
