Song of the Week! 19 February 2022

Another Pops feature to close out the week, the same tune that's going to make its console debut on the freshly-announced Nintendo Switch Taiko game! (unless STH steals its thunder beforehand, of course)

After last week's feature with Sobrem's Taiko debut, this kinda segways nicely from there as Korean musical talents are back on our drum-shaped menu! More specifically, this time around we're served with a cover version of DDU-DU DDU-DU (뚜두뚜두 in Korean), a 2018 single from the all-female K-pop unit Blackpink (블랙핑크), formed and in activity since 2010.

The act came to be due to a worldwide-held talent scavager hunt from South Korean multinational agency YG entertainment, strong of the success of their first female act 2NE1 from 2009 and looking for an encore with the initial project of a 9-member unit to premiere in 2012. After multiple setbacks and delays, the project has ultimately morphed into a female quartet under the name of Blackpink, chosen as a tonal color contrast as to signify how "pretty isn't everything", with its members being gradually revealed throughout 2016 and performing live in both solo and group events: Kim "Jisoo" Ji-soo, Jenny Kim, Roseanne "Rosé" Park and Lalisa "Lisa" Manobal. The 'starting from square one' figure of speech for this act is as literal as it could ever get, as their debut single album was titled just that -Square One- , the first in currently a dozen-fold discography with yearly Kroea/worldwide concert projects to boot!

DDU-DU DDU-DU has first appeared in the Korean Extended play release Square Up on June 15th, 2018, later on also getting released as a single in Japan on August 22nd of the same year. This was part of an EP after a year of hiatus for Blackpink, so the unit's members prized for their comeback piece to be full of 'sincerity and affection' to welcome their fans back from June 2017's "As If It's Your Last", their previous original song release. Doubly-certified a Platinum seller in its homelands on both sales and online music video plays, the same accolades were mirrored on the gold rank in some foreign countries as well, including Japan and the United Kingdom. The one disctinction the song held for quite a long time was its official YouTube music video being the most-viewed one from a Korean unit, a recurd that was currently shattered by later releases from the male-lead act BTS, as well as three later Blackpink releases (and a standalone one from band member Lisa).

Even if note stanzas are repeated twice in groups of 4 more than opnce in its Oni chart, DDU-DU DDU-DU has still quite the odd 1/12 curve ball to throw in the face of its player, so be sure to slow your hit ratio for that one part accordingly!
