The Almost Transient Mysteries: The Hidden Secret Behind Tsumami-kui Performance

Thanks to Sehuny and I'm don with you kats (Nether) on the Taiko no Tatsujin Discord for setting off this little journey.

Being more than 5 years overdue certainly makes it transient for the longest time. The Tsumami-kui Performance (つまみ食い演奏) mode was first introduced in PSP2 and then revived for Wii4 and Wii5, after which it went on to inspire the Taiko Training (太鼓トレーニング) mode in PSVita1. Today we look at those later incarnations for a quaint little secret.

"It's just a training mode that lets you rewind songs. What's so hidden about that?" And THAT is what is so hidden about this.

Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Ketteiban costume gallery

Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Ketteiban has the largest set of costumes ever in any Taiko game; more than 100 of them. Each costume is given to players for passing each song in its songlist, and is a collection of new costumes plus old ones from all previous console Taiko games.

10./00. [3DS] Time Travelers (Level 5) - 9.054 / NEW

Taiko 3DS lands in an impressive 2nd place in the top ten for its opening week! In four days of sales too; the last time any Taiko game reached 2nd place in the weekly chart was last year (Taiko PSP DX). DX had more units sold on week one than 3DS though, this could be because the userbase for 3DS is still growing in Japan. The DS userbase who bought Dororon! Youkai Daikessen! and Nanatsu no Shima no Daibouken are transitioning in nicely, Media Create reports.

Well it could have been first place, but it's up against the eternal sales juggernaut that is Pokemon, which just came out a month ago. Maybe next game.

For the record, all the 10th anniversary Taiko no Tatsujin console games are in the Top 50 this week! Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Ketteiban is in 25th place while the much older Taiko no Tatsujin Portable DX is still hanging on at 45th! Group photo everyone, nice work!

Launch week comparison:

Taiko 3DS: 65462 (4 days)
Taiko Wii 4: 32098 (5 days)
Taiko PSP DX: 80215 (5 days)
Taiko Wii 3: 29328 (4 days)
Taiko DS 3: 70000 (3 days)
Taiko Wii 2: 28282 (3 days)
Taiko DS 2: 55950 (4 days)

Average daily sales on launch week:

Taiko 3DS: 16366/day
Taiko Wii 4: 6420/day
Taiko PSP DX: 16043/day
Taiko Wii 3: 7332/day
Taiko DS 3: 23333/day
Taiko Wii 2: 9427/day
Taiko DS 2: 13988/day

Famitsu score for Taiko 3DS: 8/8/8/7 = 31/40 (same score as Wii 4)

Background glitch returns in Taiko Wii Ketteiban

If anyone remembers this small glitch from Taiko Wii 3, the background change lags slightly when you move from genre to genre, resulting sometimes in the Namco Original genre getting the rainbow-colored BG from the Random Song select pane. That has been fixed in Taiko Wii 4, but with the addition of the + and - buttons to quickly swap between genres, it inadvertently caused the bug to reappear; there are several times where the background lags sufficiently to show a different color on different genres (orange background for Game Music, green background for Anime etc) if you spam the +/- buttons fast enough.

This is shown in the first few seconds of the video until....what. A pink background (Children/Folk genre)? That's not even in the game! Looks like the background is stuck between two different hues and froze in the middle!

The Tale of Fuuga and Mirai's Taiko Classroom

The story mode in Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Ketteiban resembles what is seen in the first two Wii Taiko games, in that the progression of the story is non-interactive and scenes are unlocked just based on how much time the player spends in regular Play mode. This article is a simple digest of everything that goes on in the scenes of the Play mode.

Spoiler alert, read at your own risk!

Namco Taiko Blog (27 October 2011) - Kettai-Ban's preorder surprises

... To be honest, today's Taiko Blog page about the 4th Wii game mainly focuses around the songs revealed last Thursday on the official website, so most of what is seen here is exactly the same stuff. Why the official blog is one week slower than its own official site is beyond me.

Taiko Wii 4 site updates again

After two great blogs by the Taiko Team, it seems the Taiko Wii 4 website was also updated without anyone noticing, with new songs and one new game mode! Let's see.

I'm really starting to think their online PV team only works one day a week lol

pikaby asks: Potential Wii4 songlist?

Unlike Taiko PSP DX which had an immense gap to fill with songs that PSP owners had not played before (and it did a stunning job too), the expectations from Taiko Wii 4 are much lower. After all, all the best from the Taiko 12, 13 and 14 generations save for a few songs have been included in the three Wii Taikos' massive tracklists, and there's not much ground left to cover.

'Toccata and Fugue'

Anyone remember this pre-release screenshot from Taiko PSP DX? Everyone going nuts speculating what 'Toccata and Fugue' could be, before the actual release of the game. After July 14, it went straight away to being a red herring. For good reason as well; the song for the prefecture in question, Niigata, was one which would only be revealed two months later. A Namco Original song, Magical Little Spaceship. In hindsight we laugh at ourselves wondering why we even created a fuss in the first place.

And then we have this from Taiko Wii 4.

The fake scores in the back? Could Koibumi 2000 be a placeholder title as well? Given Namco's attention to detail when it comes to hiding secret things in screenshots, I wouldn't be surprised.

Wikihouse has removed Koibumi 2000 from their Wii4 list. It's still here, but only time will tell if this is real or not.
