Song of the Week! 18 November 2023

Not every single case across the many "song perma-deletion from Taiko" ones we've seen across the years has ended on a somber note! This is a story of not even two months ago...

Do you remember Make debut!, the first opening song from the Uma Musume Pretty Derby anime series, based of the CyGames online manga run (and later on, a gacha) of the same name? Long story short, it became a Taiko-playable song during Nijiiro Version's 2nd year and on May this year it was unceremoniously whisked away, effectively axing the one and only official Taiko outing this song has ever had. This time around, however, rather than having some unexpected console revival to preserve the same song from there on in the likes of Gen3 Taiko arcades launch's maximum the hormone, we got another Uma Musume song to cut such losses! It's still up in the air whether this song will meet a similar end in the future or not, so we might as well start talking about it the same while we're on an "it's alive!" mood, aye?

Umappyoi Densetsu is quite easily the horse-racing franchise's flagship song, with its first appearance online dating as back as March 2016 for a promo video predating the public release of the original Uma Musume e-manga! The composer behind this song is Akihiro "Dr." Honda (本田晃弘), a former Konami composer with a few musical contributions to bemani gaming en large who's currently an inhouse CyGames artist. The vocalists are the VAs for three of the horsegirls that were already part of the Make debut! vocaloist ensemble as Team Spica: Special Week (CV: Azumi Waki), Silence Suzuka (CV: Marika Kouno) and Tokai Teio (CV: Machico), three characters who would eventually achieve "poster girl" status and travel across other CyGames gachas, from the ever-living Granblue Fantasy to the soon-discontinued World Flipper.

Umappyoi Densetsu as a song is so prominent to be featured in a huge pool of album CDs from the franchise, including all the Starting Gate and WINNING LINE albums as well as some of the Anime-release-tied ANIMATION DERBY series. Each and every time, the song's later releases would feature a different cast of vocalists across all horsegirls' VAs and even some of the supporting full-human cast of characters for both solo and group performances, not to mention it becoming one of the ending themes for the anime series' first season (the 5th one), justifying the double genre in Taiko. It's aptly fitting to state how this song is to the Uma Musume franchise as THE iDOLM@STER is to... well, THE iDOLM@STER!

Playing it straight is the game of Umappyoi Densetsu's Oni chart, with a timid start and some unusual longer Don-Kat-alternating clusters for the licensed-tune 7* range, near the start. All its drumrolls are soon replaced to make way for more intricate 1/16 charting for the Ura Oni mode, one where every single giant Kat note scrolls at your face at a slightly-faster pace of 1.5 times the base BPM's speed. Watch out for those seemingly-empty stanzas too, as a couple of slightly-faster big Don notes await at x2 and x3 times the regular pace, respectively!
