Song of the Week! 1 October 2022

Due to some unfortunate happenings in next-door music gaming (and one bit of news from last week we forgot to pen on the blog in a timely manner), we're back to talk about Touhou Project arrangements to show how the flimsiest of bugs can still be noteworthy benchwork material for rhythm gaming demons...

About a year ago, the Taiko no Tatsujin series has been an active bystander to the coming of AQUA STYLE and DeNA's gacha rhythm game Touhou Danmaku Kagura, being one of three games to welcome two of its launch songs as playable tracks (including one we've already talked about in the past). Now here we sit, a little bit after said Touhou fangame's 1st anniversary, in what has eventually turned out to be Danmaku Kagura's very last operational month, as the game will close up shop in a few weeks from now, on October the 28th. Sure, some of its legacy will go on with those two songs outliving its source game elsewhere, but it's a bit sad the same...

Garnering notoriety at launch as Danmaku Kagura's very first boss song, Matsuyoi Night Bug is performed by COOL&CREATE's Beat Mario, with minor vocal backing from the same circle's Amane (あまね). It's based on Imperishable Night's Stage 1 Boss BGM, Shunshun Shūgetsu (lit. 'Wriggling Autumn Moon')~Mooned Insect (蠢々秋月 ~ Mooned Insect), the track playing for the battle against the insect-manipulation-capable firefly Wriggle Nightbug, a character who would later on return as one of the bosses for the sidegame Shoot the Bullet and a number of official printed works across the years, the latest of which being for the currently-ongoing Foul Detective Satori manga. Other contributing artists to Matsuyoi Night Bug include IOSYS's Maron (まろん) as its co-composer and guitarist Terra (テラ), aka Kyosuke Terasaki (寺崎京介) from Touhou doujin circle Girls Logic Observatory (少女理論観測所).

Together with Touhou Danmaku Kagura's main theme Gensou ni Saita Hana, this tailor-fit Wriggle Nightbug theme arrangement was shared near the source gacha's debut to both arcade Taiko no Tatsujin and a couple of music-rooted Taito games: Groove Coaster and Touhou Spell Bubble, the proprietary Puzzle Bobble fangame with a music game spin to its gameplay. Several months later, however, it also received an additional port in bemani's jubeat series, only this time with no mention to its source game whatsoever; in fact, rather than by the Wriggle jacket used for Danmaku Kagura and Taiko/Groove Coaster, it's instead identifiable by the album jacket of Touhou Sound Fireworks (東方オトハナビ), the COOL&CREATE album release which first hosted the song's full version. Being one of the "DanKagu Originals", an additional album release is planned for this song, the game's main theme and all other debuting arranges in a dedicated AQUA STYLE album release that will be available to purchase from October 24th, a few days before Danmaku Kagura's permanent shutdown.

There's not that much to write home about the track's Oni mode beyond repeating 1/16 charting schemes and not going beyond 3 notes per cluster, but the story is pretty different for its Ura Oni setting, added a few months later together with the just-patented obligatory yearly ancient meme 2hu song for Autumn Reitaisai(TM) for the year 2021. Now the biggest enemy is the fact of nearly 1/4 of the chart being made by big notes, hindering a smooth charting readability in conjunction to the almost-omnipresent x1.33 scrolling speed modifier to make things even more hectic. Good thing this one is an arcade Taiko treat that allows to single-hit big notes for all the points, otherwise you wouldn't even begin to hear the end of console Taiko scoring horror stories a-la Oodain!
