Song of the Week! 7 May 2022

So let me rap about that one time when Taiko no Tatsujin collaborating with the DC Comics universe had been a thing...

The date was October 2017, around the time when were first revelared the first promo posters for one of American multimedia distributor DC Comics would unveil the latest of their animated productions: a story where the iconic character of Batman would be pushed inside the timeframe of a Feudal Japan era where one of Gotham City's most infamous criminals, the Joker, has taken root as Japan's leader with many other villains from the comic as his trusted feudal lords to strenghten his rule.

Months later, the flick would be digitally distributed in the Americas as Batman Ninja, starring Takashi Okazaki (岡崎能士) of Afro Samurai fame as its character art director and animated by the same Kamikaze Douga studio which would go on producing the lucky Anime transposition of Pop Team Epic. While the movie's debut in the US has occurred on the digital/physical storefront's shelves between April and May 2018, the Japanese rendition of it actually had its debut on the silverscreen, during June of the same year, as Ninja Batman. Another remarkable change from the original English-rooted release was the overall script direction; the original project's story was singlehandedly penned by Kazuki Nakashima (中島かずき), already popular for his editorial godhand for the Getter Robo series as well as series in the likes of Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill, with his version of the Ninja Batman script being adopted for the JP run. By direct admission of screen writers Leo Chu and Eric Garcia, the movie script was completely reworked by the two of them, resulting in two radically-different movie runs in spirit, while sharing the same visuals between the two.

Flashforward to November 2018 and the mobile-friendly Taiko game would lead a month-long collaboration run between the two Japan-rooted IP venues, with Ninja Batman songs becoming playable for a limited time alongside a promo Don-chan costume unlock to make him look like Gotham's caped crusader in the Japan-inspired flick. As the event lasted until mid-December, mobile Donders only had a little over 32 days in order to officially enjoy this song (and even less days to spare for GAT-TAI, the other limited treat for the collab!)

Ninja Batman's eponymous theme song by Yugo Kanno (野祐悟) really sports a miniscule note difference between Muzukashii and Oni modes, with the main diverging difference being Oni mode starring more than just full-Don clusters.
