Namco Taiko Blog (August 6th, 2021) - Taiko de Time Travel pt.6: 70's Showa Idol

Come tomorrow, we'll officially be halfaway through the Taiko no Tatsujin series' anniversary-fueled original song project, going back in time (for the most part) as new tunes are introduced month by month.

The latest entry is here to further testify how 'growing with Taiko no Tatsujin' is not a concept that applies to your average drummer, but to many of the contributing artists as well!

Donning a new official English translation from last July's livestream reveal, we're also learning how this song is another vocals-powered one... from a singer who's just as old as the Taiko no Tatsujin franchise! Joining seasoned BNSI musician Kawagen Kollagen of Scool Matters song series and many-a-Taiko-livestream fame, today's interview session also stars the singer yuzuki from Hong Kong.

Starting from the PSP games since the elementary grade years, yuzuki's fondness for Taiko gaming truly came to be the day in her junior-high years when she found a Taiko cabinet nearby the Hong Kong airport and played with the Futsuu mode of Sotsu Omeshiki, creating fun and fond memories to build upon the cherished BGMs and minigames from the Sony portable titles. This episode made her realize how playing certain charts might ignite for many the will to get a little better over time because of the fun already achieved on entry-level challenges, so she's made this love song with the seasoned BanNam veteran aiming to reflect both the 'love for Taiko' side and 'love to catch up with your opponent's skills level' side. Kawagen Kollagen chose yuzuki for her soon-to-be-20-aged status in line with Taiko no Tatsujin as a whole, together with her voice fitting the bill for the idea of the 70ies he wants to convey with the song, between the synth riffs and the sound style/apparel fashioned after the musical portfolio of such bands as the musical act Dan Ikeda to New Breed (ダン池田とニューブリード).

The road to this Namco Original's production was not one made out of posies and sunshine, but still fueled by both artists' listening background. On top of Kawagen's musical inspiration, singer yuzuki also states how she got used to listening to Japanese performers in young age due to her family, coming to know and love Noriko Sakai and the rock band Anzen Chitai (安全地帯). Growing up, Ito Tsukasa, Megumi Asaoka and the same Kawagen became what to look after for her song-making inspiration, but for the task of a sample-less showa idol song, she performed with the mindset of singing as she was just performing her very first song as a 70ies showa idol herself! Kawagen's greatest hurdles, however, lied on the song-making schedule in of itself, as the Coronavirus shut down many a venue to either record songs or listen to live music, so he had to build up a culture from home and even purchase recording-studio equipment for himself in order to take on this job. It was such a slapdash experience that during the deadline week he had to both perform a final mixing, incorporate yuzuki's lyrics on top of it and then re-record the whole song from scratch without anybody noticing it!

Both artists are glad the series has made it to 20 years and managed to gather fans all around the globe, alongside for being able to celebrate it with a song of their own that plays around shuffle beats that are held so dear to the 70ies. This is also some sort of a circle-closure for Kawagen Kollagen, seeing as he made it to make his ideal 'song cycle' that grows alongside its creator, together with the original Sotsu Omeshiki and the 2-ban extension! Both the composer and the singer/lyricist also hint at a 'Taiko-like' element laying hidden in both the song and its notechart, but God knows what's gonna be...

The Taiko de Time Travel project's second half will start in September, with the 60ies Showa Anime trends being tackled by one BNSI musician being responsible for single-handedly carrying the modern Classic song genre on his own hands... and guitar strings!
