Song of the Week! 1 November 2025

Being true to oneself in spite of adversities of any kind is usually a good thing!... although I'd have hoped that even with the royal pains I'm going through, I'd avoid putting our weekly appointment at the 11th hour here...

 saint (Saint Seiya)

The now-ending day in Italy -November the 1st- is reguarded as a national holiday devoted to all saints in the Christian religion. While of course, nothing of the sorts can be fished in the Taiko series' collective music nexus, we do have something Saint-related still to be covered around here, although we're moving the framing on another side of the Mediterranean Sea as seen by Japan, right into Greece...

Penned by mangaka Masami Kurumada (車田正美) in the years 1985-1990 among Shueisha's Jump magazines, Saint Seiya is a fighting-based fantasy story born from the author's initial will of making a martial-arts story starring a fledgling karateka named Seiya. Believing, however, that judo/karate alone lacked a strong-enough appeal to make for an enticing story, he blended elements from astrology and the Greek mythology to morph the final product in what can be enjoed today still in a 28-tankobon-collected journey: the struggles and endeavors of a quartet of Bronze Knights (including the same Seiya) in their quest to safeguard the Human reincarnation of the goddess Athena, thanks to the powers awakened as disciples of a constellation tied to special armors -the Cloth- which is able to awaken one's Cosmo inner-power with a complete attunement with it.

The original anime run from 1986-1989 from Toei Animation (the one with Pegasus Fantasy as its first opening theme) covers up the manga's first two arcs, while the final one -the Hades Chapter- had to wait almost a whopping 20 years to see the animated treatment as a series of OVAs by the same name, from 2002 to 2008. Side stories in both drawn and animated form have sprung forth in such a time span, including a sequel manga from the same Masami Kurumada titled Saint Seiya: Next Dimension - Myth of Hades, whose chapter run ended in July 2024.

The third song starring Yamada "NoB" Nobuo (山田信夫) from the MAKE-UP unit after a couple of Super Sentai tunes (Go-Go Sentai Boukenger and Tensou Sentai Goseinger), this song has more to talk about its split Taiko games outing rather than its by-the-numbers 6* Oni notechart, in spite of the rare 6-note cluster for the Oni rating range. Indeed, as it has seen housing in six different games/families to date, in three of those is already an off-limits affair to reach via legit means, considering the DLC discontinuation for the PSP Taiko games and the planned death of the iOS/Android-friendly apps housing it.
