Song of the Week! 30 November 2024

Today's feature is sort-of a follow-up of last week's, in that it doubles as a handy reminder on soon-ending things in Taiko. With a doubly-perma-removed song and its grounds behind its termination(s), to guess what's gonna disappear forever is a pretty easy feat...

As you may remember, the Android mobile market is about to be devoid of active (and official) Taiko no Tatsujin videogames as last year's RHYTHM CONNECT will meet its End-of-Service date in two days.

Alongside all the exclusive rechartings/Ura Oni additions that were slowly ported to one of the currently-active Taiko fronts (arcade, Rhythm Festival and Pop Tap Beat), several licensed picks that were revived just for this service will see another perma-deletion instance from franchise availablility; for all the once-arcade-exclusive songs getting the boot like Telecastic fake show, we also got former console/mobile-exclusives that were terminated as part of a subscription plan before... and getting the axe once more, with RHYTHM CONNECT's closure! Such is the case of Original Color Girls!!!!, one of the mobile-exclusive tunes from VR idol unit Enopi (えのぐ) and the only of a trio of songs from the same unit to have survived the perma-deletion rounds from Taiko Plus Shinkyoku Tori Houdai's app termination.

The tale of how this act came to be is a curious one, starting out from the bi-yearly Comiket event of all places! More specifically, at Comiket 92 there was an exposition booth inside the Tokyo Big Sight which would allow attenders to engage in conversations with virtual idols of all sorts, as part of a still-unnamed project of the venue. Among these were a couple of idols initially signed together as "Antama" (あんたま), both sharing their wish to become idols despite no one knowing them yet: Anzu Suzuki (鈴木あんず) and Tamaki Shirafuji (白藤環). That event's promo stunt was to make them debut as an actual idol act if their promotional social media page on Twitter would get more than 10.000 by the end of August 2017's 3-days Comiket window, but as the quota wasn't met, their debut had to wait another month, as their debut album was released after trying out a similar subscriber-milestone campaign on Twitter the month after. Eventually in early 2018, Universal Music -the label publishing their earliest albums- proposed for the unit to welcome more members, ultimately gathering in Hinata Nao (日向奈央), Haru Natsune (夏目ハル) and Sakurako Kurihara (栗原桜子) and rebranding the band as Enogu in late March 2018. Nowadays, the unit is still active with tens of physical and digital single releases under their collective belts, although both Haru and Sakurako left the act at some point.

Original Color Girls!!!! comes from Enogu's second album release: late-September 2020's Masshirona Yume no Sekai (真っ白な夢の世界, lit. 'Pure White World'), alongside the album-opener Dreamin' Girls which was also made available for Taiko-gaming means. The two songs, in fact, had a simultaneous debut for Taiko Plus Shinkyoku Tori Houdai as a means to advertise their then-latest album release (April 2021's Rinsen Taisei), with OCG being the only one added to the default tracklist and the other two standing as Taiko Music Pass exclusives. On RHYTHM CONNECT, Original Color Girls!!!! was one of the few Pops licensed songs not only sporting its unique album jacket art but also a custom cut of its music video, played alongside the usual drum-pounding gameplay antics!

On a gameplay-wise talk, what is about to leave us for good (again, for the second time) is a slow-flowing challenge with a permanent scrolling boost and pure 1/16 charting based on 2/4-hit clusters, up until the very end. If you want to have a try on this Yuugao no Kimi-like experience, you gotta act fast!
