Song of the Week! 11 February 2023

Thanks to the latest Weekend Warrior addition of today, we did it at long last- for the first time in arcade history, there are now exactly a thousand different songs to be able to be picked up and played, all in the ongoing Gen4 firmware cabinets family.

In order to celebrate such an accolade, February's Ura Spot this year is all on Nijiiro's part!

We've already seen last year how wild can a random arcade Game Music happestance can be, but even on the source material at hand it may leave attenders speechless the same on the subject matter. Take, for instance, another Game Music treat all Nijiiro players got to enjoy since last year, coming from a nearly-10-years-old otome game for a long-discontinued portable system, of all places...

A Japan-only PlayStation Portable exclusive since October 24th, 2013, Kamigami no Asobi is a female-oriented visual novel codeveloped by Nippon Ichi Software and Broccoli, donning a Ludere Deorum Latin subtitle that bears the same 'Game of the Gods' English meaning as its main title. Taking the role of Shinto shrine apprentice Yui Kusanagi, players will be transported to the realm of the Gods after touching a particular sword, heralded by the Greek pantheon's Zeus. In the hopes of relinking the ever-loosening ties between mortals and the gods of yore, the thunder-bearing deity has created a school in a separate world to teach them how powerful bonds can be, inviting Yui to enroll as well and letting the player develop feelings with one of its attendants. Despite its limited upbringing, the game managed to garner enough traction at the time to be worthy of a 12-episodes Anime transposition from Brain's Base in 2014, as well as a PSP/PsVita sequel two years later by the title of Kamigami no Asobi InFinite.

Both the opening and ending themes for the original PSP title were performed by Daisuke Ono (小野大輔), also voicing Hades Aidoneus in the games and Anime series. It's the second time we hear his voice in Taiko lore after the Cells at Work! opening theme, but it's instead the fourth time we meet composer Agematsu Noriyasu (上松範康) on Song of the Week guardwatch, as the Elements Garden unit's founder was first heard for his former work on Chaos Rings, Nanoha A's and Maji Love series! The single's release date actually predates Kamigami no Asobi's playable debut being a September 26th, 2012 release, while also bearing the game's ending theme -Akatsuki no Wadachi (暁の轍)- as its Side B!

Looping patterns with Don couples and sparce 1/16 charting gaps rule the regular Oni's charting way, while the more dense cluster play on its Ura counterpart makes it easy to be compared as a beefier Yuugao no Kimi-like Oni challenge, minus the scrolling speed changes. Alas, it managed to stay afloat for one arcade year before disappearing forever from official Taiko forays, with no console ports of sorts..
