Song of the Week! 23 July 2022

Just two days ago, we caught notice of a brand new Omiko City-styled DJ Mix hitting the official-Taiko YouTube scene... by this point, you know well what this means, right?

Sibling to one of the Taiko web anime's richest (and a bit snobbish) drum enthusiasts, DJ Fua is back at it again for the 7th time with a brand-new DJ Mix, grouping a bunch of former Namco Originals under a unique banner: the High Speed Core Collection (高速コアコレクション). At the time of this writing, it turns out we've still got to talk about four of its songs along the SotW/Series Showcase lines, but our unwritten "No More Than An Ura Oni Feature Per Month" rule lets us narrow down the choice to this here nifty couple of tunes.

The first of our duo is Colorful, the first of two Namco Originals (to date) being made by Shogo/Shougo Nomura (Twitter), which lately enough seems to be more incline to the sole 'Shogo' name on social media. Since the last time we penned about him, however, something interesting has happened to the musician's professional career: he actually got hired by Bandai Namco on April 1st last year, as Shogo Nomura himself has voiced about on Twitter (link)! While still releasing solo works on his own, he's also involved in the track arrangement of inhouse Bandai Namco works, the first credited contribution for whom being for the March 2022 platformer/battle royale game Survival Quiz CITY.

This lively piece first moved its steps as a Blue Version seasonal Rewards Shop unlock, before eventually getting staged releases on both Session de Dodn ga Don and the ongoing smartphone Taiko games' Gakkyoku Tori Houdai subscription model. It's a song that clocks under the 2-minutes checkmark, sure, but its music-notation-oriented charting sure takes advantage of every single chime of it! Muscle memory can help you so far, where slight repetitions-with-changes charting combines both 1/16 and 1/24 signatures to take care off in its brutal 2nd Go-Go Time!

Matching the same platform releases of Colorful is also today's second track, the final one to be featured in the freshly-launched High Speed Core Collection. It was also a Blue Version debut, sure, but the first ones to face it had to go through a more arduous journey than just to grind Don Points in public Taiko builds...

Indeed, this was the signature Taiko song that was adopted for the Area Elimination phase of the Tenkaichi Otogesai tournament's very last edition back in 2018, receiving its public debut once that the Finals event was truly settled down. Creating the track are a couple of artists who've also made one Taiko-tailored unique song for one of the former versions: composer steμ and singer siroa, seeing their Taiko Drum Monster getting ported in all the other participating games and doubling it down with the exclusive Seiten no Reimei (lit. 'Dawn of the Blue Sky'). For the 5th Otogesai's song comments section,
steμ even brought up an energetic "†WAROTA†" message from Yuji Masubuchi, in order to celebrate the momentuous reprisal!

True to the spirit of the Seiten in the song title, each of its difficulties bear a number of notes that is a multiple of 10, with the Max Combo transition on Kantan-to-Futsuu and Futsuu-to-Muzukashii literally resulting into a note double-up from the easier difficulty on each duo. For the 3-digits-breaker Oni chart, however, expect a trial that can retool fiendish treats of previous Taiko hells into a differently-harmonic package, from the tonal-shift a-la !!!Chaos Time!!! where a different tempo signature is the leading key (without the slow-scrolling gimmickry) to quite the brutal chart finisher in three acts of teeth-grinding, cluster-compounding action!
