Song of the Week! 9 December 2023

Here we are: the last Ura Oni feature for the year! Who better than an act so familiar with Weekend Warrior series debuts to don such a mantle, around here?

Once more with passion, composer/guitarist Yuni Minami (南ゆに) and singer/Alician lyricist Nene Akagawa (赤川ねね) are back to deliver another song for Taiko gaming under the Alice Schach and the Magic Orchestra act. Seeing as our Ura Oni feature for October this year was for a Variety song while November's (one of the two) was a Namco Original, this sure is a way to bring a fitting closure to the year- a song bolstering both genres on arcade grounds!

Doppelgangers had its debut just one day prior its Nijiiro Version debut on Youtube, with quite the graphic MV to boot, the independent upload of which possibly being the reason for this song going under a dual-genre labeling, even if similar scenarios were handled slightly differently in the past (ie. LeaF's Ka). Strong disclaimenrs in the same video's description on how it and the song's lyrics are not related to the Taiko franchise further drive that point home, and from the same artists no less! Also to note how the song's original upload is worded slightly differently from the Taiko notation, with the expected Umlaut/dieresis notation on the a vowel ('ä') for the Doppelgänger word.

The greater mystery surrounding the song is the main-genre-attribution change that occurred some time between its debut and now: at first, the song on release was labeled as Variety first and foremost (watch the blinking banner below the song name on either videos here, denoting the song's main genre), but some time later, that same main-genre attribute for Doppelgangers had changed into Namco Original (link). No such worries are to be had on its Rhythm Connect port, as the song is only Namco Original there!

For some mid-to-high tier Oni/Ura notecharts to keep people on their toes throughout the entire run, look no further than Doppelgangers! Even the more regular patterns to be read on a static sheet can be troublesome in action, when coupled with eye-straining barlines of the trippy fashion (brand new TM) or single notes being sped up to 3 times the base BPM value (x2 on the Ura). Technically-hard pieces to hit still lurk around the Ura Oni's latter end, as there's little to no room for rest in-between the wicked 1/24-into-1/16 hybrid-clusters parade!
