Song of the Week! 17 December 2023

...yeah, I know. Internet-related stuff on my end has been a nightmare to work on, so I had to post our weekly appointment on Saturday once again... hopefully a double-header will make this water under the bridge at a quicker pace!

Anime representation in Taiko gaming has been quite a fickle thing across the years, between being the occasional hot sensation of the season that shook the online scene like a storm or for being one of the many Bandai-gripping series for which getting a hold onto music rights for secondary project is cheaper for the Taiko series development team to fetch (think Kamen Rider/PreCure). One of the parties sitting in the middle ground is the SPYxFAMILY series, which we've already taken a glance at last year. Between a console-exclusive Ura Oni and the two subscription-exclusive (at this time) themes up there, the Nintendo Switch is the eye of this one Anime storm, which I wager it's perfectly coincidental with the same platform housing the first videogame for the franchise
(also by Bandai Namco)... and don't call me Shirley!

What we have here is also something unique among what we've been used to for the genre, between the original versions of the songs or full-on cover versions: both tracks are "official cover versions" from the respective makers, meaning these all come from the anime's respective original official recordings but with slight extra bits edited in for these ports.

The first of the two is a medley made of three of the show's background music pieces, whose names also double as the Taiko medley's title: WISE (up to note stanza 17 ingame), BONDMAN (note stanzas 18-37 ingame) and STRIX, which was also used on its own for the SPYxFAMILY collaboration event with the everlasting Mixi gacha Monster Strike (link). The show's BGM duties for both ongoing seasons are handled by Toho Animation's (K)NoW_NAME, anunit founded in 2016 specifically for anisong/OST duties for some of the Japanese distributor giant's modern works.

Unlike wehat the Japanese subtitle states ingame, the succeding song SOUVENIR is not the SPYxFAMILY Anime series' 2nd season opening theme (which is Ado's Kurakura instead), but rather is the second opening used for the first season's latter half. This one is made by the long-running act BUMP OF CHICKEN, managing to become the second Taiko-sourced tune from them not to come as a cover, right after the Anime-exclusive GO from the Granblue Fantasy animated series.

On both sides of this family-slice-of-life coin, 16th notation charting is the leading hand in the midst of a linear BPM change, something that is somewhat the case of the W-B-S medley sporting really small and non-decimal shifts along the way. A mindful eye for last-second accuracy slips for the few 1/12-spaced notes on the former is still a must, though!
