Song of the Week! 14 January 2023

Blazing at high speed is a song that bounces back from Japan to America and then to Japan again. AIEEE!

The Namco Original that came out just today is another of the second Columbia Makes contest's victors, one track that has been lauded by Etou for its intonation and development, making its peak moments shine with careful shifts. Many Japanesque songs were discarded in the modern contest runnings beforehand, but styling it in a cyber-sounding landscape with the right directions is something that in the right hands might take form into something greater... which is why we can talk about this song, as one of the latest TnT contest winners!

I've delayed the usual 'source/artist origins' talk a bit and there's a hefty reason for this story in particular. Behind the Ninja Never DieS! alias is hidden the nicknamed Nanodesu! (Twitter; SoundCloud), usually worded in a manner that makes the name handle pop out in a mirrored manner (!すでのな, or '!Sudenona'). Already dabbling in the indie music scene as both a BMS contestant (Game Ride) and a foreign music game contributor (The show's over*, from Dynamix), a nickname change had to be done in order to join the Taiko no Tatsujin contest, as any name vaguely similar to any pre-existing external products or services would not be allowed, as also penned by the composer herself on Twitter (link). In order to make it somewhat linked to the same author, you can trace back to the '!SuDeNoNa' wording by reverse-reading all capital letters and exclamation point in Ninja Never DieS!

The choice on Shuriken Runner as the song's title lies on the weapon of choice of the eponymous protagonist in Ninja Slayer (ニンジャスレイヤー), the American-rooted online novel series from Bradley Bond and Philip Ninj@ Morzez, needing a fast character and tool to dispose of equally-fast and stealthy enemies such as ninjas. Etou surely is one to catch a referencing network quick, considering how his judge remarks on the song start with the iconic "AIEEE!" yell popularized by the novel series, shouted by unsuspicting individuals when being caught off guard. Not only that- the Oni Full Combo unlockable title for the song on Nijiiro arcades is literally 'Aieee!' (アイエエエ!), too!

In the most 1/16-adherend charting job this starting year has landed us yet, bouncing repeating teams and a certain sense of urgency makes playing this track not an unsurmountable feat, but also not a complete cakewalk for the 9* ballpark, either. Also, don't forget: every string of fast-scrolling big notes ends with a Kat note if it's preceeded with Don notes... and vice-versa!
