Song of the Week! 9 October 2021

Believe it or not, today's Saturday song has something in common with the Song Series Showcase that got posted earlier in the day; for you see, ... In roughly ten days, Zero is also going to be the number of official Taiko games housing today's pick (at least, as of this post's original posting date)!

While this Yo-kai Watch tune reads 'Anime' on its label (and also Kids from its Nijiiro Version days), this song's genre might be more appropriately be the Game Music one, seeing as before becoming the eponymous Anime series' 7th opening theme, You Got a O-tomodachi was the theme song for the third generation of games from Level-5's lucky series!

Said lineage in question started with the twin release of Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi (妖怪ウォッチ3 スシ) and Yo-kai Watch 3: Tempura (妖怪ウォッチ3 テンプラ), both launching in Japan on July 16th, 2016. The series' human protagonist Nate moves with his father and closest youkai companions to St.Peanutsville, a city of the fictional BBQ country that is heavily fashioned after the USA and North American places and customs in general. The change of setting is also reflected into the newly-remodeled battle system based on youkai medal placements to dodge and perform attacks, as well as a whole new set of 'regional' youkai to battle and befriend known as the (not joking!) " 'Merican" youkai. Later down the road, a third version of the game was released in Japan in late December '16 known as Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki (妖怪ウォッチ3 スキヤキ), which would eventually be ported worldwide as the sole, 'definitive edition' of the game between the years 2018 and 2019.

This is the latest musical entry in the Yo-kai Watch Taiko-friendly selection to star the nicknamed King Cream Soda (高木貴司) as its main artist, with the duo of motsu/Takashi Takagi (高木貴司) handling its lyrics set and leaving the song's composition/arrangement to Anime music veterans Tomoki Kikuya (菊谷知樹) and FRAME. For quite a nostalgic licensed songs fan from the Taiko Wii game days such as myself, the best comparison I can pen to this lively track's Oni chart is a revised and updated version of Jungle P of One Piece fame, with backbeats opening note stanzas to tacke and even meatier cluster sections to 1-up the opening theme from the Straw Hat pirate's musical brigade.
