Namco Taiko Blog (October 15th, 2021) - Taiko de Time Travel pt.8: Edo Period

Halfaway through the month of the 31st-day's yearly spooky shenanigans, we're greeted with the next installment of the Taiko de Time Travel celebratory song cycle, proving with its latest entry how standalone original songs are not the only kinds of tunes invited to the fray...

Nijiiro Version New Song: October 16th, 2021

Nothing spells "20-Years Milestone" better than the continuation of one of the original song series that spans across multiple Taiko gaming generations! Seventeen (17!) years since the release of the original Garyoutensei, Kakumi Nishigomi is back for a 10th iteration of his shout-powered Japanesque compositions trend for Donders everywhere to drum with. The artist is no stranger to the Edo period's setting with the creation of a song that was styled around the idea of Matthew Perry's black-sail ships signaling the period's end (Kurofune Raikou) and with his latest piece he's instead highlighting the same Edo period's finest hours with the economic prosperity brought by the Genroku period.

For such a return to the Taiko scene, the composer aimed to come up with something extravagant to reflect the "Original Happiness" era's prosperous horizons, chasing down a high-tempo swing mood and implementing gradual tempo increases a-la Shin Garyoutensei. Even the voice of the Butou songs' iconic shouts, Yajuru Miyajima (ヤジュール宮嶋君), was called back to record brand new shouts for the occasion...With such high preparations for the anniversary-rooted track, hopefully you too will face the tonal whiplash of being greeded in a foreign country with gorgeous costumes by hearing this song, just like illustrious foreign explorers like the renowned Marco Polo have faced themselves many centuries back!

Of course, it's not a proper Butou song if we're not headed towards a 3-way, forking-locked Oni branching chart! Following the post-Takahashi charting trend that was started with Ouka Ranman, three different notecharters were called to craft the three branching Oni variations of the song which -going in crediting order from Normal to Advanced and Master routes- are SueP (すえP), Chuji (チュジー) and Kijikiji (キジキジ).

Starting from the Synchronica veteran, she's glad to be charting for a Taiko song series she grew up with at Bandai Namco's, so she opted for a more-linear musical charting notation for a challenge that can be enjoyed firmly with the aid of the "most-plain possible seasoning", an approach she also took for the KFM sets for the very same Isseifuubi. Strong from his last series contribution as Ouka Ranman's Normal route, Yuji Masubuchi's charting alias has leveled up in order to bring a refreshing "Edokko-like" experience with his mixture of 8th triplets (3 notes per beat) and 16th notes (1 beat) to go along with the swing/boogie vibes and give out the impression of an Edo kid's sense of courage, spacing areas of 4-in-a-row notes in what regularly are 3-notes-per-beat passages to give out the feeling of a spring with 4 steps while you should have taken 3 instead. When the same approach is taken to the speed-cresctiendo portion, though, that might lead to some risqué rhythm improv... Kijikiji, on the other hand, prized his charting way for a "tricky and responsive", so expect his Master chart to resound to the Donkatsu rhythm with the chime of changeling cluster density between 8-beat triples and 16-beat triples.

Together with the interview portion for tomorrow's weeekend warrior, Etou of the Taiko Team also penned this entry with the intendion of spreading one interesting development of the official Bandai Namco YouTube channel: from now on, the Namco Original songs to be featured in there will all become the full-playable cuts instead of the half-minute preview snippets we're used to hear for a while, starting with Kobukyoku "Enma" and the four Namco Originals from the latest Nijiiro Version seasonal Rewards Shop/final Ranking Dojo trial. Hell, the Isseifuubi clip you can hear on this very post's top is already what it's going to be its full-length playable version!

Join us with the Taiko Team next month, as we're heading to the Heian era with one indie doujin unit with a rich experience on Touhou, God Collection songs and Lettuce...
