Despite the recent worldwide debacle, the update to the fourth generation of arcade Taiko no Tatsujin (nickname Nijiiro ver.) is still set in stone for March 24 2020 (if any arcade center opens for you to play, that is). The Genre Debacle
The large-scale genre reworking that we saw from JAEPO 2020 trial cabinets is officially confirmed. The eight-genre system we have grown so used to between the 2nd and 3rd generations will be reorganized into six:
- ポップス Pops
- ボーカロイドTM曲 Vocaloid
- アニメ Anime
- キッズ Kids
- ゲーム＆バラエティ Game & Variety
- ナムコオリジナル Namco Original
Also, to help newer or casual players find the songs they want, songs may be put into multiple genres at the same time if they satisfy all respective criteria. More details will be available on the Donder Hiroba once Nijiiro ver. is released.
The Rewards Shop function from the 3rd generation is also getting a revamp! Now simply named the Don Medal Shop (どんメダルショップ), Donders can now listen to previews and buy the songs directly on the master song list, and then play them immediately.
Everything else remains the same with the old (Don Medal) Rewards Shop though, including the seasonal rotation of lineups and the reset of last season's Don Medals across the season change (so use your Green ver. Winter medals soon!). The first lineup for the new shop is the Nijiiro ver. Spring shop, featuring:

クラシックメドレー（ロック編） Classic Medley (Rock Ver.) カッティアワールの宝剣 Kathiawar no Cutlass ナマハゲノウタ Namahage no Uta via lacteaMeanwhile, the Katsu Medal currency and the Katsu Medal Rewards Shop (including Title Part Gacha) will be removed. Worry not though, as the Taiko Team is considering channeling those rewards to other unlocking methods in the future.
The Functionally Function Functionalities
Outside of those already announced previously (original, our coverage), here are more functional updates in the new version:
- In previous generations, if you fail any song before the last, you risk losing the rest of your credit, unless you successfully save it in Revival Drumroll (復活連打). That is now gone from Nijiiro ver. and you will always get the set number of songs even if you tanked hard.
- The Skip (スキップ) maneuver is added help you navigate the ever-growing song list. Hitting the drum rim twice on the same side in quick succession lets you move 7 songs at once instead of one-by-one.
- But there's more! You can make the song list Skip continuously by hitting the same-side rim again while a Skip is happening. When you get to where you want, hit the opposite side of the rim to stop the continuous Skips.
Donder Hiroba Updates
The Donder Hiroba companion site also receives quite a few changes and additions with the new generation: (what greater Asia)
- You can check Donder Hiroba notices even when you are not logged in
- Donders can now set up to 30 Favourite Songs (お気に入り曲)
- Follow (フォロー) and Friends (フレンド) updates:
- Following other Donders will add them to your Following List (フォローリスト)
- Donders will become friends when they follow each other
- Donders will be notified of their friends' news and updates
- There will be no limit to the number of Donders you can follow or be friends with
- Existing friendship in Green ver. will be maintained in Nijiiro ver.
- Block List (ブロックリスト) updates:
- There will be no limit to the number of Donders you can block
- Donders that you have blocked will not be able to see you in search results, check your info like profile and scores, or send you Challenge Gauntlets
- The new Profile Visibility Settings (プロフィール公開設定) lets Donders set which item to be publicly visible by others.
First to reassure you that most of your precious player data will be kept across the version change like most similar handovers. Here is an exhaustive list of what is kept as-is:
- Your personal Don-chan's name and color scheme
- The outfits items you own and are using on your Don-chan
- The titles you own and are using
- All unlockable songs received
- Crowns achieved (NB. crowns for your past Donderful Combo are not yet available)
- Totals achieved for title unlocking (number of plays etc.)
- Most-favourite Song, Favourite Songs and Recently Played Songs data
- Default Performance Options set in Donder Hiroba
- Whether Oni difficulty has been opened
- Whether How to Play has been watched
However, there are also some player data that will be kept but with some modification:
- Scores and Good/OK/Bad breakdown on each notechart
All achieved scores will be recalculated under the new scoring system going into Nijiiro ver. If the song is played in both (old) normal and Shin-uchi systems in the past, the better result under the new system will be kept. - Number of plays, clears, Full Combos and Donderful Combos for each notechart
Only one set of these numbers may be kept. If the song is played in both (old) normal and Shin-uchi systems in the past, whichever system got its scores kept will also have their set of such numbers kept. - You will receive these Taiko Sounds if you did not own them previously: Festival (お祭り), Cats and Dogs (いぬねこ), Gorgeous Taiko (豪華な太鼓), Snare Drum (ドラム), Tambourine (タンバリン), Rap (ラップ), Synth Drum (シンセドラム)
Not every functionality in the current generation will have a similar equivalent at Nijiiro ver.'s release, but are expected to be back at a later date. If you want any of these to return sooner, make sure to make yourself heard to the Taiko Team!
