Song of the Week! 8 February 2020

You've heard the news: in about a couple of months, we're going to witness the coming of a brand new generation of Taiko no Tatsujin arcades, giving the ongoing Taiko 0 family line its well-deserved retirement rest after more than 8 years combined.

Among the many changes, one of the most palpable is the drastic song selection screen layout changing in order to display song titles horizontally on a vertical display, as opposed to what has been done up until now in arcades/console games up until the PS4 release. As a public service for our viewing audience, we're easing the visual transition by spotlighting songs that have come to the Nintendo Switch Taiko game, so that you can get used to the vertical layout more easily.

Starting things off is one of the songs that managed to cross multiple modern Taiko gaming under a short time span!

 Roki (ロキ) MikitoP feat. Kagamine Rin (みきとP feat.鏡音リン)
Version
Allx3 (118)x3 (162)x4 (258)x7 (576)
 Taiko 0 G, Taiko PS4, Taiko NSwitch
 150
 J-Pop -> Vocaloid
 roki

Ever since the inception of Vocaloid-powered songs in the series, it's no surprise for us to spot several tracks starring both the spotlighted Vocaloid's voice(s) and the one belonging to the same song's composer, often leading to the song to be classed for Taiko genre means as not a Vocaloid, at least once among any of the series' games. This honor was relegated to tunes heading to the Namco Original genre up until the release of Roki, whose first home was the J-Pop one incstead.

Originally published on February 27th, 2018, this rock-styled duet song is composed by the nick-named Mikito-P, one Vocaloid producer we've already had the occasion to briefly talk about on this corner years, ago, in occasion of the SotW entry of his Yi-er Fanclub (link). For the song, his own voice is used alongside the one of the Kagamine Rin V4X voice bank, while for Roki's live stage venues (Magical Mirai '18/'19 and other Hatsune Miku-centric concerts) his part is performed by the V4X voice bank of Kagamine Len instead. It sure has been a long way since Mikito-P's "Legendary miki Waste" days, considering the astronomical success garnered by Roki in less than two years: with more than 40 million views gathered among YouTube, Niconico and bilibili (of which about 32.4k come from YT alone), not only it is worthy of the Hall of Legend status, but it's also the artist's most watched song to date!

Taiko no Tatsujin has been one of the intermediate stops for Roki's music gaming adventures, getting its fair share of ports both before and after its Bandai Namco contact, including Taito's Groove Coaster, several bemani music game series (Nostalgia, pop'n music and SOUND VOLTEX) and Sega's non-Project Mirai music game trilogy (maimai, CHUNITHM and Ongeki). Different cuts of the song have been used for each series, no less!

Taiko no Tatsujin got Roki last year as part of a pre-emptively advertised cross-inclusion campaign between both the arcade and console front, with Green Version getting it first in late June last year as a J-Pop piece and getting ported on July (NS Version/Drum 'n' Fun) and August (Session de DDgD/Drum Session) of the same year as a Vocaloid track. Lots of small cluster formation and break-less cluster formations that would be suitably at home in any of the 8-star Idolm@ster old Oni charts are served for each of the song's outing, so you'll get a fair 7-star challenge regardless of the gaming platform of choice you're willing to play this song on!
