Song of the Week! 16 February 2019

The date is set for the next arcade firmware's coming, and so are we with our usual 'Road to the Next Arcade Version' series of features!

As usual, the songs that will be forever lost for the official series' playable state will take the highest priority here. Or at least, for the time being, some of them...

 Geki-rare-san Special Medley (激レアさんスペシャルメドレー) Geki-rare-san o Tsuretekita.

Together with the Sou-uchi charting frontrunner Dance My Generation (of which we we already about three years ago, mind you!), the J-Pop/Pops genre will have this peculiar medley filling the ranks in the forever-lost playable tunes. Kind of a shame, considering that it was about the best we can get nowadays of a public broadcast with Taiko Team members since the UStream/Nicovideo livestream line's discontinuation!

TV Asahi's Geki-rare-san o Tsuretekita. (激レアさんを連れてきた。, lit. 'I Brought Mr. Rare') is a late-night weekly Variety show where news updates from all over the word were brough up by the work of the titular Mr. Rare and his team of researchers, consisting of the show's hosts and its occasional special guest. Originally aired as a Saturday/Wednesday Variety under the name of 'Update University' (アップデート大学), it's still ongoing to this day. On October 1st, last year, Taiko Team's very own Yuhei Etou was picked up to star in a guest segment, with him and the show's music staff coming up with the assignment "Let's make a Taiko no Tatsujin Music Score". The chart was then played in the episode and the day later, it was also added to all Blue Version cabinets! Our First Video feature for the song also holds some screens from this peculiar guest segment, no less.

As a Taiko song, this future perma-deletion from the cumulative series song roster breaks new grounds in some of the most... curious milestones. The first coming our way is the fact of it being the new lowest-Oni-note-amount song, topping other modern offerings like the PPAP song and the Japanese cover of Beauty and the Beast, also from Blue Version! With a publicly-available time span of 163 days from its inclusion to its future deletion, this special medley is also the new champion in the 'publicly-playable for the shortest time' in franchise history, topping off one Cocotama-related removal from Yellow Version. To put things on a perspective, the Geki-rare-san Special Medley's life span has been shorter than the operational time of the very first Taiko no Tatsujin arcade (166 days), accountable so far as the lowest life span of an arcade title for the franchise!

The best phase I can muster to describe this Geki-rare-san medley is "Babby's first Suuhaa 2000", as scrolling alterations for sudden drumrolls go hand to hand with the many minor BPM shifts!

For the more music-game-navigated people out there that by reading 'a la Mode' in the title might have gone through intense beatmania IIDX flashbacks, please hold off your horses! The source material is of an entirely different nature...

What we have here is Yuri Komagata (駒形友梨)'s opening theme for Toei Animation's Kirakira☆PreCure a la Mode Anime series, the 17th in the magical girl metaseries Pretty Cure. In this installment, the protagonist is the 2nd-year middle schooler Ichika Usami, a sweet-loving girl who wishes to work in a patisserie. Her wish has a chance to (somehow) come to fruition when is visited by the fairy Pekorin, gifted by the power of being able to see the magic energy inside sweets -the 'kirakiraru'- made of the love poured into their creation. With the rise of evil faeries who are out to steal all that magic source by themselves, Ichika accepts the call to become a Patisserie Cure to fend off their evil deeds inside a mobile patisserie, joining forces with other five Cures as times comes by. Aired as a 49-episodes series between February 2017 and January 2018, the Precure a la Mode series boasts a 2-tankobons Manga transposition as well as a movie, aired on October 2017.

As usual for this franchise's opening themes in Taiko, talking about its notechart schemes is more of an ode to repetition in comparison to previous endavors, as basic 1/12 charting with cycling notechart sections are the returning key factors to this song as well.
