Song of the Week! 29 December 2018

Rounding off 2018's Song of the Week feature cycle, we have an user request that gathers around some of the most recurrent Namco Original artists for a single track!

Making its debut in one of the final 3DS videogame's first DLC pack, Ryuu to Kouken no Himegimi (lit. 'Princess of Dragons and Black Flame') is a six-hand, goth-inspired composition made by a trio of people that are responsible for a good number of tracks in the ongoing Taiko generation: the lyricist Yura Hatsuki (葉月ゆら), her composer/arranger Taiko companion Drop and Tsukuyomi Records founder Hisui (翡翠), assisting for the first time as a singer in a Taiko song. With Yura Hatsuki also singing for the song, this also makes for one of the few Namco Original pieces to date with a male/female vocal duo performance, no less!

Fully charted by Taiko Team member Marimo Institute (まりも研究所), this is one of the Taiko tracks where it's easy to notice how its base BPM value has been increased for the whole song's duration, judging by the lower-screen supporting characters' dancing speed! More specifically, the base BPM has been doubled up with a x0.5 scrolling speed modifier being applied for the whole song, a flair which is usually set to make more visible notes being spliced in at different tempo signatures (mostly 1/24), but for its Oni mode it's just a regular 1/16 parade of note clusters, with many special notes and note patterns that give one or two winks to the charting style of former songs like Yuugao no Kimi.

Always from Marimo Institute we also get an extra layer of Oni mode difficulty, where the peculiar BPM/scrolling speed combo setting actually helps to visually distinguish between the regular timing signatures and its variations for the song's charts, mostly relying on aggressive 1/24-1/16 cluser hybrids as well as some 1/12 long clusters towards the end as an average curve ball. Muster up the physical stamina between handswitching-heavy formations and note-density changes is key!
