Song of the Week! 23 February 2019

Continuing from last week's sob-story, today we're talking about the last of the 5 perma-deleted songs of the incoming Green Version launch day, as well as including a sneak peek at one of the new tracks that said firmare is going to receive on the same day.

After the Touken Ranbu OP theme removal we've talked about last year (link), here's yet another opening theme for a gacha-game-turned-Anime-series that is about to close up shop for good on Taiko shores, with Blue Version's firmware termination. We've already had another occasion to talk about the original source material years ago (click here!), but as we did skip out the basic plot details back then, what better time than now to pick up the pace?

CyGames's browser/mobile RPG gacha game Granblue Fantasy (グランブルーファンタジー) follows the adventures of a young Captain, set embark on his own adventure with the lizard companion Vyrn in order to follow the father's footsteps and become a renowned skyfarer. One day, in the city of Zinkenstill, the player's Captain character happens to rescue a girl named Lydia from the clutches of the Erste Empire's army, searching a way to harness the mysterious girl's hidden abilites to take control over the Primal Beasts in its strive for world domination. While fleeing from the Erste Empire, the Captain now travels the world in search of answers and a safe place to be for the newfound companion, while also dabbling around the whereabouts of the long-disappeared father as well as other mysteries of the world.

Around the very same base story frame of the game, the 12-episodes Anime series Granblue Fantasy The Animation (グランブルーファンタジー ジ・アニメーション) is set to narrate the first fragments of the series' story, starring the male variant of the Captain (Gren) as the protagonist. Produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Yuuki Itoh, the series ran from April to June 2017, with two more OVAs made for it in the same year and plans for a 2nd season being openly announced to be set in motion on a later time.

Being charted by Marimo Institute (まりも研究所), clusters of unusual combinations await the daring players of this song's Oni mode! ... or at least, that is the case until Green Version's launch day comes by. Another curious time-limited way to experience the opening theme by BUMP OF CHICKEN was offered through Oira, the April Fools Taiko sim game from the Granbue Fantasy development team. This one version is also notable to have the opening movie from the Anime as the song plays out, instead of the usual custom dancers ensemble!

In order to counter the usual gloom of lost-forever tracks, here's one of the brand new inclusions from the new firmware.. Yeah, sure, as for every other licensed tunes it will risk to become perma-deleted sometime in the future in the chance a console game port doesn't happen (futurenaute's note: it did happen), but that surely is not why we're talking about this quirky tune on this day and time!

Taking a page from similar story premises in animated media of the past like the 80ies edutainment series Once Upon a Time... Life, Manga magazine Kodansha's Cells at Work! (はたらく細胞) runs under the premise that every cell's biological component inside the human body is antropomorphized, letting the viewers learn more about the human body works as its components live their daily endeavors to keep healthy the whole being they belong to, with the plot focus mostly rotating around the Erythrocite (Red Blood Cell) AE3803 and the Neutrophil (White Blood Cell) U-1146. The original manga run, penned by Akane Shimizu (清水茜), has started on March 2015 and is still running, counting 5 tankobon releases, one light novel adaptation and four manga spin-offs from different artists as of today.

The Anime series, made by David Production, ran in 2018 between July and September, counting 13 main episodes in total with a year-end special episode on top. Composed and lyricised by the nick-named YUMAO, its opening theme Mission! Ken-kou-dai-ichi (lit. 'Mission! Health First') is one of the many that star the very same Anime series' main voice actors as the singers; in addition to Kana Hanazawa (花澤香菜) and Tomoaki Maeno (前野智昭) who respectively dub the aforementioned Red and White cells, Daisuke Ono (小野大輔) as the Killer T cell and Taiko-familiar Kikuko Inoue (井上喜久子) as the Macrophage lend their voice to the show's opening theme as a quartet!

Repeating note stanzas frame yet another upbeat addition to the Taiko arcade-first roster for the genre, mostly starring mono-color clusters. Think of it as a more accessible primer to harder Oni charts for songs a-la Swan Lake ~still a ducking~ that make of speedy solo note formations their forte!
