Speaking of well-known puzzle games on Taiko no Tatsujin, we have talked about Puzzle & Dragons, Doctor Mario and Tetris (sort of), but we never got around to Puyopuyo, probably because its very limited appearance on Taiko games. But on the exact 3rd Anniversary of the Android version of the card RPG spin-off Puyopuyo!! Quest releasing (and of me playing it), here's the deserved look at the very series.

Puyopuyo (ぷよぷよ, also spaced as Puyo Puyo) is a puzzle game created by Compile founder Masamitsu Niitani (仁井谷正充) and started off as a puzzle game spin-off to the turn-based RPG series Madou Monogatari (魔導物語, lit. Magic Using Story) by the same company, using its characters and lore. The premise is simple: drop the eponymous jelly-blob creatures to the field and connecting 4 of the same color clears them. Building on that to introduce chains and competitive gameplay makes the whole experience more complex and challenging.
Compile proceeded to make a total of four main series game, each with twists added including offsetting damage and special puyos, until the company's eventual bankruptcy. Even after that, Sega took up the intellectual property and later started a revamp with it, beginning with Puyopuyo Fever, with a completely new universe and gameplay gimmicks all while not forgetting to slightly tying back in with the Compile era settings. Now 25 years since the first release, the latest twists in the still active franchise include a collaborative console title with Tetris with mixed modes between the two, and a tread into the mobile card RPG market with returning characters new and old from the series as well as original designs.
While Puyopuyo has mostly been and most probably will still be a very Japan-only franchise even after 25 years, there are some ways to experience the games (minus importing like you guys probably already do with Taiko). You can find the first Puyopuyo game as Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (Sonic skin) or Kirby's Avalanche/Ghost Trap (Kirby skin), Puyopuyo Fever released in various consoles in most regions, and Puyopuyo 2 recently coming to out-of-Japan 3DS as part of Sega 3D Classics Collection.
The song, whose title literally meaning "Everybody battles! Puyopuyo until the morning", started off as the BGM for the first levels of the tower mode in Puyopuyo Tsu/2. In later games after Sega took over, it was remixed and used as either a general battle BGM or the main theme of Carbuncle, the lovable yellow sidekick of Arle with a penchant for curry and troublemaking. Despite the opening of today's feature, it is not yet put to use in Puyopuyo!! Quest.
Notechart-wise, there is no mixed-color clusters at the 16th separation, but the an abundance of hanging doubles and offbeat notes may be challenging for new Muzukashii players unfamiliar of them.
