Namco Taiko Blog (27 January 2011) - Taiko no Tatsujin 10th Anniversary

No big announcement this week. Namco are using the February calendar desktop to remind us that next month is Taiko no Tatsujin's 10th anniversary! After all, the very first arcade was released on 21 February 2001. To commemorate, Namco made February's calendar desktop chock full of Taiko no Tatsujin characters new and old. On the left are Dr. Waruru's robots from Taiko Wii2 and the Dokon Gang from DS2. On the right are some of the monsters and Ponko from Taiko DS3. Even the yellow and green drums from Taiko Wii 3 jump in to celebrate. The rest are Taiko staple characters which you've all probably seen at least once.

I'll put these in the Others section for easy downloading!

Site annoucement: Broken video links

A reminder to our readers: If you find a video link that is broken or links to a video that is either banned or no longer available, please email either me or Lokamp (our addresses are in the Contact page). This is important so we can continue providing good video links to Taiko videos around the web, as they can change dramatically.

The reason I wanted to post this reminder was because a budding Taiko video maker, hisuisep9, was recently banned from Youtube, causing many videos of his which were linked on this blog to break. It's relieving to know that his videos are mainly of the Taiko 13 generation, so the broken links are mostly new songs and not many fixes have to be made. The songs fixed are shown in the changelog. If you find hisuisep's videos on the blog, please tell us and we'll replace them.

Variety Showcase: Piramekino Songs

Now here's a Japanese variety show not many people will have heard of. Piramekino is a kids' show, aired on TV Tokyo. The show hosts, Hanya (はんにゃ) and Fruit Punch (フルーツポンチ) are from the General Performing Arts School of Yoshimoto. Think of this as Sesame Street for Japan and you can see the resemblance. Its target audience is also roughly the same as well. The wide success of Piramekino among Japanese kids since made the program quite popular still nowadays, with a 2nd broadcasting season and several TV specials grouped into Piramekino [G] (where G is for Gold).

In the Taiko songs you'll probably have noticed a few weird cartoon characters from the Piramekino cast, the one standing out being the red and blue-dotted panda with the lightbulb on its head. The characters are used in the anime shorts of the show to tell their stories. The panda is appropriately named the Pirameki Panda, and is one of the main mascots of the show.

See that? That's why. BOTH console Taiko made top 10 of 2010 on their respective console sales. The numbers are units shifted from the time it was released to the end of 2010. Nothing beat Pokemon B/W, of course, except maybe Monster Hunter Portable 3, but that's not on this list. Wii Party was top of the Wii sales, indicating casual power hasn't waned completely yet.

Namco Taiko Blog (20 January 2011)- Mitsubachi Daisakusen song lyrics

Remember the honey bee minigame in Taiko Wii 3? It had a really ear-wormy song playing in the background, and this wasn't playable in the main game, which also makes it one of the first time a song placed in a Taiko disc wasn't used to play Taiko. Such a pity, it's a nice song...Oh well. Maybe at some point they'll make this song official.

Composer, lyrics: YMY

I'll get to translating as soon as I have time.

Staff Interview- Rokodo

For those of you who don't know, Rokodo is responsible for the graphic design in Taiko Time blog! (well, the header and the background anyway)
Who are you and what are you doing here?
Boku wa Rokodo desu. I am a computer enthusiast and I moderate osu! in-game chat channels (IRC). Some people like to treat me as if I am a taiko-map-test-bot.
When did you start playing Taiko?
25th December 2007
What was your first console Taiko version?
Taiko no Tatsujin DS: Touch de Dokodon
What was your first Taiko arcade version?
-
What are the versions of Taiko you've played before then?
-
What's your favorite console/arcade version?
It's not about the version, it's about the maps! You can't possibly ask me to choose. :3c
What's your favorite control method?
osu! + TaikoJiro simulator: Computer keyboard, full alternation of four fingers. Index fingers for don and middle for ka(t).
DS: Two fingers of doom! Full alternation.
What about on the arcade?
-
How long do you usually play Taiko?
Assuming this poorly phrased question means "in one session", anywhere from 10 minutes to 6 hours.
What's your favorite genre?
Namco Original. It has the hardest maps. :3c
What's your favorite song and why?
Stardust Witch Meruru OP theme from Ore no Imōto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai - oh wait, that isn't on a Taiko game is it. -.-"
I like any song that has an 8+ star Oni map. High BPM and standard note scroll speed is welcome.
What's the song that gives you the most trouble?
That's a tough one. Rotter Tarmination Ura Oni on the basis I can't even read the last note stream. I hate those maps.
What's your least favorite song?
Anything that is still 3 stars or less when it is on Oni difficulty. v.v
Do you actually like any of the side modes/minigames in Taiko?
They can be pretty fun, but I play taiko for taiko. Not for the extras.

Who are you and what are you doing here?

Sounds like a mystery even for me... Okok, jokes apart I am a lazy donder from Italy, and actually the youngest member of the Taiko Time staff. In this blog, I'm the big mind behind the Song of the Week feature and - of course - most of the Song series articles. I'm more of a clean-up person, fixing links and fetching some news. Aquabluu corrects my articles a lot. ;^^

The Mysterious 1STPAI

A secret hidden deep within Taiko no Tatsujin Wii 2, accessible only by the Taiko Team themselves and hackers who rip the disc and extract everything in it. On the surface, Taiko Wii 2 has 70 songs, but there's actually one more song deep in the program code. It isn't playable, cannot be unlocked, has completely no data. The only thing this creepy song has is an ID, '1STPAI'.

You'd be forgiven for not even calling it a song at all. It's a horrific, crazy mixture of footsteps (the same footstep sounds from Taiko DS3), screaming people, then followed by a remix of Wrath of Requiem and cackling noises, ending with the whole song rewinding on itself and the footsteps again. This is one nightmare-inducing song.

The voice in the middle repeats the same phrase 'youkai' over and over, and together with the footstep sounds, it is speculated that 1STPAI was intended as a teaser to the soon-to-be released Taiko DS3 (Dororon! Youkai Daikessen) for those who could work their way into the hidden corners of the Wii2 disc.

1STPAI. The horror.

Song of the Week! 1 January 2011

What a coincidence. After the Saturday which fell on Christmas Day, this Saturday is also an important day..it's the first day of a new year! And for this occasion we've chosen yet another special song.
