How to Unlock Oni Difficulty

Oni Ura Oni

Oni difficulty is the fourth and highest difficulty setting in Taiko no Tatsujin. It was introduced into the second arcade version as the Donderful difficulty, then renamed to Oni on the 7th arcade. The mode is always kept locked in the arcade at the end of every play, despite being common knowledge to expert players. For most Taiko players, it is also the standard difficulty to challenge, the rest of them being stepping stones to skill improvement.

Players who are accustomed to console Taiko may not immediately know how to unlock Oni difficulty on the arcade and there is absolutely no indication on the machine as to how it is done, resulting in it only being spread through word of mouth. Namco have released details on the command for unlocking Oni on most of the websites for the newer arcades, so Oni difficulty is getting more exposure and not just an underground technique among the experts.

Unlocking Oni in the arcade
Taiko 3 to 6
On the difficulty select screen, while Don-chan is on Kantan, hit the drum's left rim ten times. Donderful mode will appear. Hitting the right rims here will bring you to Battle Mode.

Taiko 2, Taiko 7 to 14
On the difficulty select screen, while Don-chan is on Muzukashii, hit the drum's right rim ten times. Don-chan will jump up and Donderful/Oni mode will appear.

New Taiko
On the difficulty select screen right after choosing a song, hit the drum's right rim ten times. Oni mode will appear. NOTE: For Banapassport holders, Oni remains permanently unlocked if the player has cleared at least one Oni song using that profile.
